What does Vates mean?
“The term vate has Celtic-Italian origins and signifies the fortune-teller
and poet. It comes from the Indo-European root wat which means something like
“being spiritually or emotionally inspired”.
It has similarities to the Gaelic term ouateis, “fortune-teller”;
the Irish term faith, “poet, clairvoyant” and the Sanskrit vatayati
“that which makes understand”
A clear evidence of its meaning of fortune-teller in Latin is Plauto (Mill. III, 3,37):
“You could be a good fortune-teller (vates), since you know the future.”
Varrón (De L.I. VII, 36) attests to the meaning of poet: “Ancient poets were called vates.”
